"Mind the Mind" from the inside

We asked one of our new Local Coordinators for a quick interview! His name is Jan and he studies at the medical faculty in the Czech town - Brno. Jan is an example of the connection between psychology students and medicine students in our campaign.

1. Why did you decide to get involved into a psychological campaign?

I felt that there is a lack of psychology projects in my home non-governmental organization of medical students called International Federation of Medical Students Associations (IFMSA). Furthermore, I am interested in psychology and miss this opportunity to practically use psychological knowledge during my medical studies. Plus, I perceive psychology as one of the most important subjects in medical education, because we treat people not diseases.

2. How do you feel in your role of Local Coordinator?

It is a great experience. Passing my enthusiasm to others is kind of natural for me. What I learn are the practical skills: organization, time management etc. I am glad to be part of such a great people network.

3. What do you think is the crucial point of a cooperation with your co-LC's?

In my opinion it is communication and sharing our ideas and motivation. We know each other well when it comes to our talents and interests. That's why we work effective, using our strong skills. The respect and willingness to do something more is also the reason why I feel so comfortable in our team.

4. What is your current situation in Brno? How many volunteers/workshops do you have?

We are finishing a preparation phase and soon we will deliver our first workshop. By this day we have about 8 high school workshops and at least 5 workshops we want to perform at a university. Together we sustain 35 people and 20 of us passed training, which enables them to deliver workshops.

We also organize a public event called "Strhni nálepku" ("Get rid of"), where people with mental illness discuss their ordinary lives. There will also be an exhibition "Příběhy bláznovství" and also our university professor will speak about the proper language, that should be used to destigmatize. We wish for the big number of visitors, ideally about 300.

5. What do you think is the message of Mind the Mind?

If we generally like people, we don't need the evidence to show mercy and understanding for their problems. The negative X-ray image is not the reason why we should treat people suffering with a mental disorder differently. We are all humans. We all have problems. We are NOT ALONE.

Social media, body image and cognition

Being a millennial living in the 21th century comes down to two things: Internet and technology. No less than 86% of internet use is dedicated to social media, while 30% of these users are between the age of 16 and 30. But, how reliable is what we see on social media? And most importantly, how does it impact those growing up and their view on life? One of the most alarming sites we can find online are those called “Pro-Ana (Anorexia) and Pro-Mia (Bulimia)” favouring and doing apology for the eating disorders. Just between 2006 and 2010 there was a 470% increase in the number of these websites. How does this affect teenagers going online and potentially receiving these types of messages? It has been proved in scientific literature that there is a correlation between being exposed to these kinds of messages and developing or presenting a negative evaluation of one’s body and body dissatisfaction. Even so, messages like #Thinspo or #thispo promoting the ideal of thinness kee

The Psychological Importance of Kindness

"Three things in life are important. The first is to be kind. The second is to be kind. The third is to be kind." (Henry James) As we all know the topic of this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week is Kindness. A topic which has special importance in human life in general and has become even more relevant in the past few months during the current COVID-19 pandemic. Being kind to others and ourselves is something we experience the need for now maybe more than usual. As written in the introduction of the Mental Health Foundation’s website: “Kindness is a cornerstone of our individual and collective mental health.” But w hat lies behind its importance? What can be said about kindness through the lens of psychology?    What is behind the importance of kindness Kindness has become a major topic in psychology and several types of research are focusing on its characteristics alongside associations spreading the word about its power. The current attention on the topic could be a resul

An Interview With a 22-Year Old Female With Eating Disorders

Do you want to know what is it like to deal with eating disorders? Then read this interview. We talked to a 22-year old sales school student who enjoys playing in cuddling with animals (any kind, any time), watching series and drawing. Her struggle with eating disorders started in 2012, when she was 15. After 7 years her condition is much better, although her battle is not completely over, yet. According to the American Psychological Association (2017) eating disorders are characterised by severe disturbances in eating behaviours and related thoughts and emotions. People with eating disorders typically become pre-occupied with food and their body weight. Keep reading if you are interested in her answers. How would you describe your mental disorder? It’s sometimes like you don’t want to eat although your body needs the food, other times it’s like you know you have to eat but your body doesn’t let you. For every meal you struggle and fight before, after and/or in betwee
